The Making of ‘Autopilot Mind’

Feb 25th, 2019 - Lucas sent this demo to the band and everyone liked how the lyrical content was about something other than a relationship. There was no second verse at the time, but the overall song structure was there after a few tweaks! You’ll notice that the beginning of the song used to just be a kick drum and a distorted guitar. We would decide down the road that this was pretty dull for the average listener and would need to be changed.

Apr. 23rd, 2019 - Chris wrote some lyrics to the 2nd verse that were inspired by some of his own personal struggles and offered them to the band. We loved how they felt and just plugged them into the song! Skip to 1:15 to hear the first take of the new lyrics, or feel free to listen from the beginning since the entire demo had gotten a bit of a facelift at this point.

Aug. 1st, 2019 - We were about to go down to Nashville when we decided that this song needed to be in a higher key to sound more upbeat and energetic. We threw this demo together in the new key as our reference for the Nashville recording sessions to come!

Aug. 14th, 2019 - We got a lot of great stuff for this song down in Nashville. Moments like the new guitar riff at 1:31 really made us fall in love with this song all over again, and even though it still needed a lot of work we were all excited to get home and finish it up. We ran out of time to record vocals down in Nashville so this recording is only an instrumental. All vocals were recorded in Lucas’s home studio later on.

Sept. 23rd, 2019 - The original name of this file is “Autopilot Mind Production Day 11” which should clue you in on how much time we put into adding every last effect and detail for this song. At times we weren’t sure we’d ever be satisfied with it, but after listening back to this final production demo we knew it was time to send it off to Dustin and let him make the final decisions for it.

What’s That Sound?

These synth ‘stabs’ are a combination of two different sounds that added a complexity to the overall rhythm of Autopilot Mind that we really love! As you can hear in the “Post Nashville Production” audio clip above, we originally had these going throughout most of the verses. Once Dustin started mixing the song he limited them to just a couple sections which really helps them to stand out in the final mix!

We all knew we wanted the bridge to be huge, so we recorded ourselves singing along in the background eight times and mixed it all together to create a choir! The percussive sounds are just all of us in the studio banging on walls, folding chairs, the floor - pretty much anything we could get our hands on.
